It is simple to obtain a consumer's charge card number, but to engage in online transactions, you'll additionally need a number from the back of the card. That is a number known as the CVC2 or security number, which is a three digit number that appears only on the card itself. The security number does not appear on the billing statement. Many Internet shops require this number as proof that the customer is the actual account holder. If some other person should acquire your charge card card number and the CVC2 number, they can go on an almost unlimited spending spree and all of the bills will become yours.
The scam is carried out by a crook who calls you and introduces himself as a representative of your charge card company. He says that he is calling because of some unusual financial transactions on your account. He describes some odd charges that he knows you did not make, and you indicate you did not make those purchases. He assures you that he will resolve any problems and credit your account. He then asks you for the security number from the back of the card to "confirm" that you really have it. If you provide the number, you have become a victim.
You are the customer of record, so your issuer does not care if you actually have the card in your possession. That means that they have no cause to ask you for identifying information from the back of the card. Consumers are often quite trusting, and if someone calls and says they are from the credit card company, many, if not most cardholders will trust them, particularly if they have your full name and charge card card number. If you provide this information, it may cost you a lot of money. Be aware that no financial institution will ever ask you to give out information that they already have.
If you receive a call from your credit card company and you aren't sure if it is for real or not, call the credit card company on your own. If you call the credit card company, then you will know for sure who you are talking to and you can then discuss the matter in person. Never provide financial or personal information to someone who calls you from out of the blue. These problems are continuous; you can’t assume at any time that you are safe from these vultures. There are people who work 24 hours a day to find ways to steal money from innocent people. .
